Arctic Monkeys face tough competition for No.1 album spot this week

Rockers Arctic Monkeys have managed to cling onto their No.1 spot on the UK Top 40 albums chart with 'AM', but today's (September 18) midweek update has shown that they're only 10,500 copies ahead of the No.2 record, which is 'True' by Avicii.

Manic Street Preachers have debuted at No.3 this afternoon with 'Rewind The Film', there's another new entry at 4 from Sir Elton John with 'The Diving Board', and Katie Melua's 'Ketevan' has made an impressive appearance at No.5.

Deaf Havana secured a high new entry with their new album, 'Old Souls', at No.7, Jack Johnson's 'From Here To Now To You' is at No.8, and Placebo have shot in at No.10 with 'Loud Like Love'. Elsewhere on the albums chart, Diana Vickers' 'Music To Make Boys Cry' has debuted at 18 and One Direction's 'Up All Night' has fallen 9 places to sit at 37.

Back in August, Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner explained that their new album 'AM' is definitely their 'most original yet': “After our first LP [2006’s ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’] I don't think we knew where we were going to go. We were never going to be a boring indie band. We were always going to explore.”
