The singer and designer put on a runway show during the world-famous New York Fashion Week and explained to Billboard.com that her inspirations included names from the music world such as "Joan Jett, David Bowie and the Sex Pistols, to name a few."

She also single-handedly selected the music for her show, which included her own track 'Sk8er Boi', and added that it was important to create a mood that went with the visual aspect of the event and look of the outfits:

"I picked all the up-tempo fun songs of mine for this show. I wanted people to have fun and be able to rock out at the show."

She also explained how her fashion sense has inspired her search for the perfect wedding dress: "I have an idea of what I want. It might be something that I buy a few different dresses and rip them up and put them all together and dye them, or maybe I'll kind of do a collaboration with another designer."

The pair announced their engagement back in August and the 'What The Hell' songstress has now explained to People magazine that her gown will be made up of parts from different dresses and if that doesn't work out she'll plan something else just as unusual:

"I have an idea of what I want. It might be something that I buy a few different dresses and rip them up and put them all together and dye them, or maybe I'll kind of do a collaboration with another designer."

She added that her engagement ring is one accessory that goes with everything and she "can't take it off": "I can't take it off. I sleep with it on. It goes with every outfit. Get engaged, it's the perfect accessory for every Outfit. I did it. You should, too."

The happy news, which surprised both the press and public, has made headlines over the past 24 hours and the pair have opened up about their love for each other in a personal interview.

Lavigne explained that it was Kroeger's sense of humour that really caught her attention: "He makes me laugh every day. He takes care of me in every way and is extremely attentive.”

When asked how he proposed to the 'What The Hell' songstress, Kroeger revealed details of a scrapbook that Lavigne had been making while in the studio and confessed that he added a page to it emblazoned with the all-important question. He said: "I knew I was falling for her. It was incredibly powerful and something I'll never forget. I feel like the luckiest person alive."

Alison Eastwood, editor-in-chief of Hello! Canada, also admitted that when talking to the couple it was clear to see how into each other they were:

"He’s totally besotted with Avril, and who can blame him? But if you see the photographs in the magazine … he’s just beaming from ear to ear. We have never seen Chad Kroeger look so happy."

She concluded by revealing that while a date for the wedding hasn't been confirmed, Lavigne "has the whole thing planned out and that it will be a huge celebration."

The musical duo have only been seeing each other for six months after meeting up to co-write a song together.

The BBC reports that a spokesperson for Lavigne confirmed the news of their engagement.

Lavigne, 27, was previously married to Sum 41 punk rocker Deryck Whibley but they divorced in 2009 after three years together.

37-year-old Kroeger, meanwhile, will be marrying for the first time.

'Sk8er Boi' star Lavigne took to Twitter soon after the news broke to thank fans and friends who had been tweeting her congratulations.

Tweeting about the follow up to her 2011 offering, entitled 'Goodbye Lullaby', the 'Girlfriend' hitmaker explained that the finishing touches have been added to the new record and she's "stoked" to share it with her fans:

"That's a wrap boyz @hodgesmusic and chad @Nickelback !!! Woo hoo. Super stoked for this record."

Last week (August 16), Lavigne took to social networking site Twitter to inform her 6.2 million followers that the backing vocals were in the process of being laid down:

"Going on our third week in a row in studio. 3 more days to go and it's a wrap. Mixing now and laying down last minuet ad-libs and bkgnd vox."

On Thursday (April 5), the 'What The Hell' pop rocker paid a visit to Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA where she spread cheer throughout the wards and even played music with the kids.

Writing on her official Twitter page last night, Lavigne explained that it was an "inspiring" trip:

"Just left Mattel Children’s Hospital @UCLAHealth w/ @EvanT – inspiring to meet & play music w/ kids. We’ve got fun plans coming up"

The Avril Lavigne Foundation was founded by the superstar in 2010 and it works to promote "choices so children and youth see they have many options in life and not just a single path defined by their circumstances" and helps "give kids and their families the strength to face their daily challenges".

The 27-year-old, who has just come off the back of her lengthy 'Black Star' worldwide tour, told the Stereotude website at the launch of her new Abbey Dawn collection that she’s working with several big names on the follow-up to 2011’s ‘Goodbye Lullaby.’

“I’m in the studio right now and I’m working with another Canadian guy who is super rad, Chad Kroeger from the band Nickelback and David Hodges, he’s also a super talented [producer] who did a lot of Evanescence stuff.” 

The ‘What The Hell’ star also confirmed that she’s teaming up with The X-Factor USA judge L.A. Reid, fuelling speculation that Lavigne may be in talks to join the judging panel. But when asked about the rumours, she brushed the question off, simply stating: “I already performed on the X-Factor and that was awesome.”  

She also went onto describe the sound of the album, adding: “I don’t think it’s as young. A lot of acoustic guitars and pianos. There’s a deep message…it’s emotional, [but] it’s a good time because the album is a little more upbeat I think. It’s got some pretty crazy fun songs. It’s about living life and just like making the most of it and having a good time.”

The 'Wish You Were Here' songstress was named Top Pop Artist by the ceremony's bosses and Billboard.com reports that "the artists were eligible for the prize by topping one of the Billboard Japan charts, which include Billboard Japan Hot 100, Billboard Japan Singles Sales and Billboard Japan Top Albums". 

Fans were able to cast their votes via the internet and although Lavigne didn't attend the event in person, she sent over a video message and thanked her followers for their support internationally:

"I'm so happy that I was chosen for the Top Pop Artist at Billboard Japan Music Awards. Thank you so much guys for listening to my music over here in Japan."

Yesterday, March 6, Lavigne told her 4.2 million Twitter fans that she is working on new material and has been in the studio with Nickelback's frontman Chad Kroeger:

"Working hard in the studio writing, recording and raging!!!! You know it. 7 days straight- who needs a break! Ha."

"Rise and shine... studio time. 6th day in a row, having a f**king blast with Chad from @Nickelback and @hodgesmusic!!! 5 songs in."

The 'Wish You We Here' pop-rocker explained that she was a valuable member of both her softball and hockey teams and the other players "didn't go easy" on her:

"I was the pitcher in our softball team and I played either centre or right wing in my mixed hockey team. I didn't just play, I was MVP [most valuable player] two years in a row. The boys didn't go easy on me either. I had to play like one of the boys to survive and it was good for me."

Talking about how she applied the skills she learned through sports to her career in music, Lavigne added to FHM magazine: "'It taught me how to be tough and how to work with other people. Those skills have helped a lot in my career.''

She also took to her official Twitter page late last night, March 1, and shared with her fans a link to a special video to thank them for their support throughout her 'Goodbye Lullaby' album phase.

The singer has helped choose a nail polish range for company Sally Hansen, with the collection due out in April.

Lavigne told Woman's Wear Daily that it is the "coolest thing" as she gets to indulge in her creative side. She said:

"This is pretty much the coolest thing, because I also do clothing - I love clothing, nails and fragrance, hair, makeup, all that stuff"

She added: "I'm a really visual person; I like creating, and I love to have fun with colours. I think this offers self-expression, and it’s a really smart, versatile way to show your style. I think my fans will really like it, because it's easy and simple and fun."

The range is influenced by Lavigne's style and music tastes and will feature 12 different designs.

Although they haven't publicly confirmed or denied the supposed split, the 'When You're Gone' pop-rocker posted some lyrics from her song 'Mobile', which deals with how quickly situations can change, last night (January 19): 

"Everything's changing, when I turn around, out of my control, I'm a mobile."

On January 18, reality star Jenner took to the social networking site and wrote a message that explained his love for Lavigne, to which she replied "luv u 2!!!":

"It really upsets me to read all the FALSE!! stories. Avril has always been there for me and is the closest person to my heart. I love her." 

The 'When You're Gone' rocker was assaulted on Sunday night (November 6) by 5 people in L.A. and revealed through her official Twitter page that she was left with multiple injuries, including a "black eye, bloody nose, hair ripped out, scratches, bruises and cuts". 

She wrote another message on the social networking site earlier this morning, November 9, and expressed her gratitude to those who have been there for her during this difficult time

"Wanted to thank all of my fans, friends and family for their support over the last couple of days. Saw all ur comments and emails xo thank u."

The 'What The Hell' hitmaker was assaulted by 5 people in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 6 and took to social networking site Twitter to tell her fans about the dramatic ordeal.

She explained to her followers that she suffered a "black eye, bloody nose, hair ripped out, scratches, bruises and cuts" and stressed that "violence is NEVER the answer". 

The picture, which was originally posted on PerezHilton.com, shows Lavigne with a deep cut above her eye and scratches covering both her cheek and face. Following the attack, her boyfriend Brody Jenner tweeted: 

"Interesting Saturday night... Just got of the hospital with a new scar on my face.. Charges/chargers!!!"

Writing to her 2.7 million followers on social networking site Twitter last night, November 6, the 'What The Hell' star explained that she was left with mulitple injuries after the unprovoked assault and is disgusted by the incident:

"I don't fight. I don't believe in it. To clear things up I got attacked by 5 people last night out of nowhere. Not cool. My face is fucked."

Talking specifically about the repercussions of the fight, Lavigne explained that she now has a "black eye, bloody nose, hair ripped out, scratches, bruises and cuts".

The Canadian popstar, who is dating Hills star, Brody Jenner, was spotted wearing a poncho last week it sparked the rumour that she was pregnant.

She clarified with Access Hollywood that she is not pregnant:

"Oh my god! I was out getting my nails done with my girlfriend and I had a poncho on...there was a whole thing online that I was pregnant. I'm like, ' How insulting!' So no, I'm not. Obviously!"

When they asked her if she was planning to start a family, she replied with: "Not anytime soon!"

The singer, who turns 27 next week, recently played in London, where she was promoting her "honest" album, 'Goodbye Lullaby'.
