Avril Lavigne denies 'Hello Kitty' video is racist

Avril Lavigne has denied accusations of racism levelled against her new video.

The singer recently unveiled the promo clip for her track 'Hello Kitty', which features on her 2013 self-titled record.

The video sees the Canadian indulge in some Japanese pop culture, as well as eating local food and dancing.

Lavigne took to Twitter, however, to bat away any accusations that she was stereotyping and poking fun at Japan. She said:

"RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan. I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video specifically for my Japanese fans, WITH my Japanese label, Japanese choreographers AND a Japanese director IN Japan."

'Hello Kitty' meanwhile was co-written by Lavigne's husband, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.
