Beyoncé course to launch at US university

A US university is giving students the chance to take a class centered around superstar singer Beyoncé.

The Department of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey is offering the class 'Politicizing Beyoncé'.

Rather than looking at the singer as a pop star, they are using her to exemplify 'American race, gender, and sexual politics'.

The class will be taught by Kevin Allred and it will look at her lyrics and music videos alongside works by black feminist authors.

He commented: "This isn't a course about Beyoncé's political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend."

Allred added: "She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona."

Beyoncé meanwhile is due to return to the UK soon as part of her Mrs. Carter Show world tour. The first date of the second leg will take place in Glasgow on February 20.
