Beyoncé becomes a university subject in New Jersey

International superstar Beyoncé has been turned from a singer and performer into an accredited course at an American college.

Students at New Jersey's Rutgers University will now be able to study the 'Countdown' hitmaker as part of their education on a course entitled 'Politicizing Beyoncé', which features in the institution's Women's and Gender Studies faculty.

Kevin Allred, the course's lecturer, explained the module to the Huffington Post and said: "This isn't a course about Beyonce's political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend."

"When students don't respond to theory or dense readings, it's often easier to see things play out in the world around them."

The teaching and exploration of pop culture is on the rise at universities around the world and over the past few years courses on the Harry Potter books and films have even been introduced.
