AFROPUNK has announced its newest way of bringing together producers, supporters, allies and consumers of black culture and its numerous strands via AFROPUNK Presents the Carnival of Consciousness. Taking place in Atlanta's 787 Windsor, it's as much a festival as a blank space to be communally created where a variety of like-minded people come together to put forth process and exchange innovative ideas, forming a new type of immersive gathering. Performers will include Tyler, The Creator, Saul Williams, Earl Sweatshirt, letlive., Cakes da Killa, Big Freedia, SZA, Kelela, Gallant, GoldLink, Ho99o9, Lion Babe, Sir The Baptist, and many more (full lineup below).

A weekend-long, retreat of music, art, film, salons, and lectures, AFROPUNK Presents The Carnival of Consciousness will be a festival of contemporary black expression and youthful black consciousness. Towards that end, the work presented here - live music and sound performances, art installations, and the like - will feature collaborations across genres and disciplines, and no physical boundaries. In the style of old salons, the audience at AFROPUNK Presents The Carnival of Consciousness will be brought together by invitation and will feature NO VIPs. (Or, more preferably, ALL VIPs).

The three-day gathering will take place in Atlanta's historic Mechanicsville neighborhood. It is an event meant to reflect the promise of our time when creativity flows freely between audiences and artists showcasing the city's brightest and most vibrant visual artists throughout the grounds of the Carnival. Featured artwork to also include offerings created in conjunction with the first artist-run super PAC For Freedoms, founded by Hank Willis Thomas & Eric Gottesman and featuring works by Coby Kennedy, Jackie Nickerson and Bayete Ross Smith.

The AFROPUNK Fancy Dress Ball will kick off the Carnival with a "J'ouvert" celebration to benefit the AFROPUNK Global Initiative (AGI). For nearly 200 years J'ouvert from the phrase jour ouvert (French for "dawn" or "day break"), has been the overnight street-parade and masquerade party at the heart of most Caribbean carnivals. Historically, J'ouvert celebrated the freeing of slaves in the colonies by invoking explicitly African traditions still holding sway throughout the Diaspora, with body-paint, masquerades, all-night drumming processions and a wild, unrestrained atmosphere. .

AGI (AFROPUNK Global initiative) will present a special series of interactive and immersive talks and panels titled Social Salons, lead by visionaries and innovators from various disciplines, including cultural critic Michaela Angela Davis, and writer and activist Darnell Moore. Activism is part of the life's blood of AFROPUNK. What that means to us is standing up for ALL black lives and intersectional identities. See exactly what they mean from a AP Brooklyn 2015 documentary below.
