Britney Spears has confessed that she has been in "horrible" relationships.

The singer told Australia's 2Day FM that despite her past record, she is always looking for love.

She said: "I've been through horrible relationships, but unfortunately I still believe in love. 

"I think you should protect your heart, so yeah, I'm a hopeless romantic."

Among Spears' previous relationships was a 55-hour marriage to Jason Allen Alexander in 2004.

The singer meanwhile has been busy for a number of months working on the follow-up to her 2013 album 'Britney Jean'.

The record is expected to land later this year, with lead single 'Make Me' recently released.
