Cheryl Cole wins X Factor USA payout over lost earnings

Cheryl Cole has landed a bumper lump sum after a court case against the producers of the X Factor USA was settled out of court.

The British singer initiated legal action following her removal from the TV talent show in 2011 after one filming, with rumours placing the blame on her Geordie accent.

The Girls Aloud star sued producers Blue Orbit for $2.3m (£1.4m) over loss of earnings.

They have now paid Cole an undisclosed sum after the case was settled out of court.

The singer signed up to appear on the US show after proving a hit on the UK version, but she was quickly replaced by Nicole Scherzinger.

According to legal papers, the singer was promised a salary of $1.8m (£1.1m) for the show's first series and $2m (£1.2m) for the second.

The deal was 'pay or play', meaning that the talent is entitled to their salary even if they are axed. Cole said she was paid for the first season, but not the second.
