Chris Martin had a 'year of depression' after Gwyneth Paltrow split

Coldplay's Chris Martin said he plunged into a prolonged bout of depression after breaking up with wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

The celebrity pair called time on their ten-year marriage in 2014.

Martin later said that he thought his problem of not opening up contributed to their downfall.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, the musician said his mood plumetted after their split.

He said: "I still wake up down a lot of days. But now I feel like I've been given the tools to turn it around.

"You can come at it very aggressively and blame and blame. Or you can put yourself in the garage, so to speak. Take yourself apart and clean off the bits. Reassemble."

Referring to a poem called The Guest House by Rumi, Martin added:

"That one Rumi poem changes everything. It says that even when you're unhappy, it's good for you.

"It took me a year to get it. A year of depression and all that."

Martin and actress Paltrow have two children together, 11-year-old Apple and Moses, 9.
