Coldplay intended to release an "intimate" album just after 'Mylo Xyloto'

Coldplay have revealed that they originally intended to release an acoustic, stripped back album shortly after 'Mylo Xyloto', but were unable to finish it.

The band's drummer, Will Champion, explained that they hoped to record a second album right after their latest offering was finished but had trouble multitasking, although some of the material that features on 'Mylo Xyloto' was actually written for the other potential project:

"Very early on in the process of recording this record we were playing a lot of acoustic instruments and we had it in our mind that we might try to record a small-sounding, intimate, reflective record. So we thought “OK, we’ll finish this one and then we’ll do another record” and the realisation came very quickly that we can’t really focus on more than one thing at once."

"So we decided to put everything in one basket and some of those songs from the acoustic thing survived – the song 'Charlie Brown' was originally in that format and 'Us Against The World'."
