Chris Martin makes cheeky One Direction comment

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin joked that One Direction weren't included in the 12.12.12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert line-up as it was "way past their bedtime".

A host of music's finest acts descended upon Madison Square Garden in New York City last night to raise money for those affected by the superstorm earlier this year.

Martin joined REM frontman Michael Stipe on stage to perform a rendition of 'Losing My Religion' and made a cheeky comment about the hugely successful British boyband in the process.

He deadpanned to the audience: "I know you really wanted One Direction, but it's way past their bedtime. That's why you get one-quarter of Coldplay."

Beatles legend Paul McCartney joined forces with remaining Nirvana band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic to perform a new song last night.

Madison Square Garden also saw performances from Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Kanye West and The Rolling Stones.
