David Bowie statue to be erected where Ziggy Stardust was launched

A bronze statue of David Bowie will be erected in the town where the musician debuted his Ziggy Stardust persona after a crowdfunding campaign reached its target.

Over 650 people donated money to have the memorial erected in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, with more than £100,000 pledged by fans. Bowie performed at the town's Friars music venue in the early 1970s.

Campaigner David Stopps commented on the project: "We are very grateful to everybody. It's been a Biblical 40 days. The bottom line now is that the statue will happen."

Bowie's booking agent John Giddings, who is the promoter for the Isle of Wight Festival, put £5,000 towards the statue. Nearly a third of donations were from outside the UK.

Bowie passed away in January aged 69 after a secret battle with cancer. He died just days after releasing his 25th album 'Blackstar'.
