Sales of vinyl in the UK are at a 25-year high, with the likes of David Bowie helping to boost popularity of the medium in 2016.

The late musician's final album 'Blackstar' was the most popular record in the country last year, while four of his other albums featured in the top 30 vinyl rundown. Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' was placed at No.2 and Radiohead's 'A Moon Shaped Pool' also sold well.

The BPI confirmed that 3.2 million vinyls were sold in the UK in 2016 - a 53% increase on last year and the highest amount since 1991. 47.3 million CDs were bought, a decrease of 11.7%, while sales of digital albums - sitting at a figure of 17.1 million - was down by 29.6%.

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor commented: "Growth in UK music consumption in 2016 was fuelled by the explosive rise in audio streaming, which has increased 500 per cent since 2013, and relative resilience from physical formats.

"Led by sales of David Bowie, demand for vinyl jumped to levels not seen since the start of the 90s, and fans also bought and collected music on CD that they are discovering and enjoying through streaming services in ever-larger numbers."
