Marques Toliver - Studying For My Ph.D

Marques Toliver "Studying For My Ph.D" Mixtape

An artist like Marques Toliver cannot be confined to one musical path. An artist like Marques cannot be confined full stop.

“I wanted to find beauty not in order and neatness. The first track goes by the name of CHAOS. Multiple tracks where chosen for the opening song, which is anchored by Roberta Flack's ‘I am the Girl’ along with ‘Keep it Between Us’ from Kelly Rowland's Sophomore album, sprinkled with a pinch of Beyoncé’s hit single, Baby Boy. The choir that can be heard weaving in and out of CHAOS is taken from a music exercise I found online about harmony.”

Following his incredible and substantial debut EP release “Butterflies are not Free”, Marques has crafted a mixtape like no other, shedding light on his musical and political heritage in order to focus things for his debut LP proper, and pay homage to how he arrived at this point.

“Inspiration came from all sorts of places for this mixtape. The sounds found on the record range from interviews from Eartha Kitt, Little Richard, samples from Bon Iver, Shuggie Ottis, Bach, and hip hop producer MADLIB.”

Marques has spent most of 2011 touring the world with the likes of James Blake, Warpaint, Liam Finn, Vetiver, Wild Beasts, performing sold-out London headline shows with a full band (St Giles in the Field, the Tabernacle) and writing his debut proper for release 2012 on Bella Union.
