Nordoff Robbins has today announced three more award winners for this year’s O2 Silver Clef Awards. One of the UK’s most influential bands, The Clash, are to receive the O2 Silver Clef Award, New York’s phenomenal four-piece, Vampire Weekend, are to receive the Raymond Weil Best International Award and Ray Davies, who started his legendary career in the 1960s, writing some of the decade’s best-loved songs, will receive the Hard Rock Cafe Ambassador of Rock Award.

The star-studded event, in support of music charity Nordoff Robbins, a favourite charity of the music industry, will take place on Friday 28 June 2013 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

THE CLASH

Despite disbanding in 1986, The Clash have maintained a global following and continue to attract new fans.  Their politicised lyrics, musical experimentation and rebellious attitude had a far-reaching influence on the music industry, becoming widely referred to as "The Only Band That Matters". One of a handful of British bands to have success in both the UK and USA at the time, the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Rolling Stone ranked The Clash number 28 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of all Time and their album 'London Calling' as the 8th Greatest Album of all Time. The Clash made their debut in 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols – the very same year as the first Silver Clef Awards.

Mick Jones from The Clash says,

Mick Jones from The Clash says,

“To be given the O2 Silver Clef Award from Nordoff Robbins is a real honour.

"Nordoff Robbins do great work and it feels special to be recognised at the O2 Silver Clef Awards.”

David Munns, Nordoff Robbins Chairman, said,

“The Clash’s music has just as much influence today as it did when they first came onto the music scene in 1976. It is no wonder ‘London Calling’ has been described as one of the most influential rock albums of all time.

“The O2 Silver Clef Award, the most prestigious of the ten awards handed out at the event, is given to a British artist in recognition of their contribution to UK music. Having been enormously influential in the UK music scene for over 35 years, I can think of no band more deserving of this award than The Clash.”

Shadi Halliwell, Head of Brand, O2 said:

"We’ve worked with Nordoff Robbins for over 10 years and we're as enthusiastic about our partnership now as we were on that very first day. We believe that music can make a difference and so we are proud to be associated with such invaluable work. The commitment and energy that Nordoff Robbins put into improving the lives of others is inspirational and we're delighted to support an event that helps to celebrate that.”

VAMPIRE WEEKEND

The New York four-piece who are to receive the Raymond Weil Best International Award, currently on a UK tour, have had two No. 1 US albums and a Grammy nomination. Their best known track ‘A-Punk’, was fourth on Rolling Stone Magazine’s Rock List. They have played the main stage at Glastonbury, headlined Benicassim, had Jake Gyllenhaal star in one of their videos, performed on top US show Saturday Night Live an impressive three times and made chart history by becoming the first independent rock band to top the US charts with two consecutive albums - all in addition to smashing the previous record for first week vinyl sales.  With a cult following of fans, the band’s music has appeared in some of the 21st century’s pop culture staples including the ‘The Inbetweeners’ movie and leading computer game franchise, Guitar Hero and Time Out London magazine recently picked Vampire Weekend as one of their eight ‘Sounds of the summer’ for 2013.

Vampire weekend are loved the world over for their unique blend of rock, punk and African music.  In 2012 they were one of four musical artists (the others being Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and John Legend) chosen by President Barack Obama to officially support him on his re-election campaign.

Lead singer and guitarist Ezra Koenig says,

"We are very happy to have been picked for this award.  Thank you."
David Munns, Nordoff Robbins Chairman, said,

With their unique sound and cult following, Vampire Weekend have made a real name for themselves not just in America but around the world.  They truly are one of the must see bands on the international circuit and a worthy winner of the Raymond Weil International Award.”

Craig Leach, Director of Raymond Weil says,

“Since 2000 Raymond Weil has had the pleasure of working with Nordoff Robbins, ‘This year, Raymond Weil has teamed up with JLS to launch a new social media campaign designed to increase the public’s understanding and awareness of the great work that Nordoff Robbins does with some of the country’s most vulnerable children and adults.  We are proud and honoured to have collaborated with Nordoff Robbins and to have witnessed their relentless efforts to transform lives through music therapy.   Again we are delighted to sponsor the Award for Best International Artist at this year’s Silver Clef Awards in London.”

RAY DAVIES

Singer-songwriter Ray Davies, who will be awarded the Hard Rock Cafe Ambassador of Rock Award, was frontman for The Kinks until the band split up in 1996. The Kinks were best known for songs ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘All Day and All of the Night’, ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and ‘Lola’. Davies and the Kinks were the third British band to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, at which Davies was called "almost indisputably rock's most literate, witty and insightful songwriter." They were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 by Pete Townsend.  In August 2012, Davies performed 'Waterloo Sunset' as part of the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics, watched by over 24 million viewers in the UK.

Commenting recently  after being presented with his Ivor Novello Award by Ray Davies, Noel Gallagher said of Davies “It’s funny to be stood beside someone you’ll never be as good as.”

Ray Davies said:

“Thank you Nordoff Robbins – to be named your Hard Rock Cafe Ambassador of Rock is fantastic.  The work you do is amazing and this is a real honour.”

David Munns said:

“Ray Davies was responsible for writing some of the best-loved songs of the 60s. The Kinks’ music was and remains hugely influential and he is incredibly deserving of the Hard Rock Cafe Ambassador of Rock Award. As one of the UK’s greatest ever singer songwriters, we are honoured to have him in the room.”

David Pellow, Area Vice President of Operations Europe for Hard Rock International said:

“Hard Rock International have a life long commitment to Philanthropy, each year we're thrilled to support the exciting work of our longstanding charity partner Nordoff Robbins at the O2 Silver Clef Awards. Always a great event and we are excited to be honouring Ray Davies this year with our Ambassadors of Rock Award.”

David Munns goes on to say,

“Since the Silver Clef Awards began 38 years ago, the event has raised over £8 million for Nordoff Robbins, allowing us to transform the lives of many thousands of disadvantaged and vulnerable people with music therapy. But we still have a long way to go to ensure we can deliver our music services to all those who need them.

“This year, we hope to raise £500,000 from the Awards to fund 20,000 life-transforming music therapy sessions for children and adults across the UK.”

About Nordoff Robbins

Nordoff Robbins is a music therapy charity, dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children and adults. They deliver over 50,000 music therapy sessions every year to people with a range of challenges such as autism, dementia, depression and physical and learning disabilities.

Music therapy is a specialist use of music to help people in many different ways – for some it has physical benefits, for others emotional or social ones and helps many to communicate where they’ve struggled to do so previously.

They carry out their work in their own music therapy centre and units, in schools, day centres, hospitals and care homes. They also train music therapists to Masters level.

Nordoff Robbins receives no government funding. They derive a significant amount of their income from individual sponsors and events such as the Silver Clef Awards and the Music Industry Trust Awards, which enable them to continue to build awareness of their services and transform lives.

The Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards, held annually at the London Hilton on Park Lane, honours artists from across the music industry, whilst raising much-needed funds for Nordoff Robbins. The event, which has raised £8 million for Nordoff Robbins since its inception in 1976, is a chance for the charity to give something back to the music industry, from which they receive significant support throughout the year. The event is attended by artists, celebrities and the great and the good of the music industry.

Last year’s winners include Michael Bublé, Kylie Minogue, Emeli Sande and Andrew Lloyd Webber and winners in other years include Muse, The Who (who won the first Silver Clef Award in 1976), Elton John, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Sting, Take That and many more. The Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards 2013 event is hoping to raise £500,000 to fund 20,000 life-transforming music therapy sessions for children and adults across the UK.
