Elton John thinks Jesus would have supported same-sex marriage

Sir Elton John believes Jesus Christ wouldn't disapprove of same-sex marriage if he was alive today.

The musician told Sky News that he feels that Jesus would be open to people of same sexes tying the knot because he promoted values of "compassion".

He said: "If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him - as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was - saying this could not happen. He was all about love, compassion, forgiveness and trying to bring people together. That's what the church should be about."

John secured a civil partnership with David Furnish in 2005 and he added that they are hoping to marry in 2015, saying:

"It'll be very quiet and off the cuff. We had our big shebang when we had our civil union."

The 'Tiny Dancer' star also said that he is due to meet Russia president Vladimir Putin in November to talk about the country's apparent poor record when it comes to gay rights.

He said: I don't know what good it will do. But unless you build a bridge, it's no good putting up a wall and saying 'I'm not talking to these people.' The only thing that gets solved is by talking to people."
