Sir Elton John slams talent show 'The Voice' for producing "nonentities"

'Your Song' icon Sir Elton John has opened up about what he thinks of TV vocal talent show 'The Voice' and revealed that it's redundant in both the UK and USA where producing genuine artists is concerned.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Front Row, the music legend confessed that the programme is yet to launch the career of the 'next big thing' and it just seems like a waste of time created only to focus on the judges:

"The Voice is all about watching the judges, it is in America. Nobody on The Voice in America has had a hit record. Nobody on The Voice in England has had a hit record - they're nonentities."

Despite initially focusing on 'The Voice', Sir Elton then critiqued talent shows in general and revealed his overall dislike for them: "Television and video have done a lot of damage to music. They've propelled people into stardom that aren't ready for it, you know, and can't sustain it. And they're only as good as the next song. I hate that. I hate people being cast aside. It breaks my heart to see people like Michelle McManus who won 'Pop Star' [Pop Idol], whatever it was, but it's not fair."

'The Voice' coach Will.i.Am also recently expressed a similar concern, telling press that "these shows render themselves pointless if they can't identify something that's going to be on the radio and that's just me being part of the show. So we spend all this time looking for somebody and they aren't on the radio?"
