Eminem to receive Global Icon Award at MTV Europe Music Awards

Eminem is set to be honoured with a special award at tonight’s (November 10) MTV European Music Awards.

The Slim Shady rapper has been chosen as the recipient of this year’s Global Icon Award.

Despite recent controversy over accusations of his continued use of homophobic lyrics, MTV have deemed the Detroit rap star to be a suitable winner.

Bruce Gilmer, executive producer of the MTV EMAs, stated: "A lot of thought goes into who could possibly be appropriate. This man, has sold over 80 million records. I think everyone agrees, Eminem is one of the most creative and unique artists of our time."

Previous winners of the Global Icon Award include Queen, Bon Jovi and Whitney Houston.

Eminem holds the record for being the artist with most wins at the annual awards ceremony, having taken home 13 gongs.

He is also the most-nominated act in the EMAs history with 26 nominations to his name.

The MTV EMAs take place tonight (November 10) at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome with performances from Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Katy Perry, Kings Of Leon and Bruno Mars.

It was recently announced that next year’s ceremony will take place in Glasgow.
