Bulgarian singer Ruth Koleva releases her brand new single, ‘Better’ – her first official single in the UK.

Taken from her upcoming album, due early next year, ‘Better’ showcases Ruth’s understated, soothing vocals on top of a lush production, courtesy of Dutch composer, Seravince. Evoking late 80s and early 90s acid jazz, it’s soulful, polished and laidback – a combination of jazz, funk and nu-soul.

‘Better’ also features Richard Spaven on drums, and backing vocals from UK soul singer Sharlene Hector.

Influenced by the likes of Jill Scott, D’angelo, Miles Davis, A Tribe Called Quest, 4 Hero, Floetry and Róisín Murphy, Ruth Koleva has quickly become an ambassador for the best of Bulgaria. The youngest recipient of GRAZIA's ‘Woman of the Year’ award (she’s also global ambassador of ELLE’s ‘Think Green Campaign’), she won ‘Best Female Singer’ at 2012’s BG Radio Awards, shared the stage with jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin, reached the finals of Bulgaria’s  Music Idol, and won over the nation with her debut album, Within Whispers, selling over 10K copies. She’s had 6 sold out National tours with fans and press loving her in equal measures. Recent press highlights including the cover of Bulgaria’s edition of Harper’s Bazaar, along with features in Elle and Cosmopolitan.

For her upcoming album, she’s enlisted a diverse array of talent, including keyboardist and composer Vincent Helbers (Seravince, Flowriders), drummer Richard Spaven (Jose James, Guru, Flying Lotus), co-writers Colonel Red, Rachel Row and Diggs Duke, and vocalist Sharlene Hector among others. 

“This will be my first world-wide album release,” says Ruth. “It’s truly an international project, with some amazing musicians involved, and one of the rare moments when you can actually hear modern soul music coming from Eastern Europe.”

Recorded at breakneck speed, working around the busy schedules of those involved, the album is due later this year, and should be important mark in the evolution of Ruth Koleva. The moment when a national treasure become an international recording artist.
