Newcomer Stevie King poised to take crown with debut single

Multi-talented musician Stevie King releases his accomplished debut single Blue Car on August 18.

The Ecuador-born, UK-based talent showcases his hypnotic songwriting skills on the yearning and enchanting first release which clearly marks him out as one to watch.

Recorded at London’s Metropolis Studios, the track’s mature and delicately plotted sound – calling to mind the likes of The War On Drugs and Midlake – shows what riches are to come from the 21-year-old. With its restrained riff and the driving rhythm of the chorus, Stevie paints a picture of a life spinning out of control.

Recalling its subject matter, he says: “Blue Car’s story is based on this kid who had plenty of family issues which led him to live a life of excess – in alcohol and other substances. As a consequence, it leads to feelings of repression, obsession and anxiety.”

A self-taught musician, he has been playing guitar since he was 14, influenced by heroes such as David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Keith Richards, and also knows his way around the piano and bass.

He is steeped in the traditions of rock classics counting Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Led Zeppelin IV and Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones among his all-time great albums, but also counts the likes of U2’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind and Sting’s live release All This Time among his favourites.

He says: “Since I was a child, I’ve always had a passion for music. In my early days as a musician I was member of a Pink Floyd cover band which played various gigs in my home town. We did a pretty decent job paying tribute to my biggest musical influence.”

Stevie – whose real name is Jose Maria Perez – came to the UK in 2014 to further his learning and he is still studying business at King’s College London. The move has opened new opportunities and afforded him the chance to find a wider audience for his music.

“Being able to record for Metropolis Studios has been a great honour for me as five years ago I was performing Blue Car in a tavern in Ecuador for a very small crowd. It is very exciting to be able to release my music in such a historic market in the music industry. Hopefully, the audience likes my music and we can build a great relationship.”

Reflecting on the magic of the songwriting process, he says: “The moments I most enjoy when writing a song are when melodies start to come together and I feel that the track has the potential to capture the audience’s attention. Most of my songs are written about hypothetical scenarios which I feel drawn to.”

Stevie’s studies have been geared towards working in the music industry on the marketing side, but his raw talent could well put him in the spotlight in his own right. As he says himself: “Let’s hope that Blue Car makes a lot of people happy and excited for new music.”

Stevie King releases his single Blue Car on August 18 with the video to follow a fortnight later.
