Exclusive Interview With Amber Donoso

Interview With Amber Donoso

Hi Amber, How’s your week been so far has it been busy?

Hi! It’s been great thank you. Super busy organising a few different amazing projects which I’m super excited for.

Fantastic, can't wait to see them. You’ve recently attended the teen awards for Radio 1, what was your favourite performance and did you enjoy your day?

It was a great experience. It was so cool to see how many people attended and how many of them were devoted fans. I really enjoyed the Vamps performance- they were really cool, full of engergy and the girls clearly LOVE them, which was sweet to see. I also enjoyed Rita Ora’s performance, she came through with a big crew of 10 dancers all dress in some kind of Burberry clothing whether it was a hat, scarf etc. I felt her live vocal was really strong so it was nice to see a strong woman up on stage doing her thing.

So you have a single release coming up. What can you tell us about “get off” and how the story came about?

‘Get Off’ is about my relationship with an ex-boyfriend. The theme of the song is being unable to move on from someone you are still in love with. When writing the song I wanted people to be able to understand my thought process in and after the relationship and how that left me feeling. The song is about Love, I’m a huge romantic.

How are you feeling about this being your debut single, How was making the move from model to musician?

I’m really excited. Its been something I’ve worked really hard for- so its gonna be great to hear what everything thinks about it. I’ve been a musician since the young age of 10 so thats always been my passion and my priority. Modelling was very short term and my way of financing my music, the modelling days came to an end once I was able to carry myself financially forward for my music.

So music has always been your passion, was it from age 10 that you knew you wanted to be a musician?

Yes 100%. I started singing and playing the guitar at the age of 10, then began songwriting at 13. Ever since then I knew music was always going to be my route in life.

What swayed your decision to earn the money to fund your career yourself instead of going to a record label?

I wanted to main full creative control over everything I was and am doing. I wanted to be be fully authentic and really represent me as a person. My songs and performance as snippets of my personal diary, so its all very close to my heart and raw. I’m very fortunate to have such a wonderful team who I work really closely with on my projects. They are very supportive and understand that I’m the leader of everything I do.

In terms of musical influences and inspirations, which artists do you feel helped to shape your sound as it is today?

I’m a massive Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu fan. I’m also really into artists such as Gwen Stefani, Chris Brown, Kehlani, The 1975 and J Balvin. So extremely varied… all these artists inspire the music I make.

What was the inspiration for the music video for “get off”?

The video is a clear representation of what the lyrics of the song is about, the visuals show the story of me and my ex partner. Parts of the choreography was inspired by Chris Brown and fashion wise by Gwen Stefani. Every snippet of the video has a very clear reasoning as to what its been portrayed and presented in that way.

You wear some amazing outfits in the video, how important is you image in relation to your music, and do you think they go hand in hand?

Thank you. Yes for sure. My image plays a massive part in who I am as an artist. How I dress and do my makeup, is a representation of my personality and how I am as a person. I love to wear different things to what people would wear on a day to day basis. For example, the bright blue metallic trousers- they are wild. I asked my stylist Ella Gaskell to get me the most vibrate yet fresh trousers she could… she definitely did the job.

Can we expect an album or E.P release from you anytime soon?

All I can say is that my next single will be released early next year. This is gonna be a big one for me so definitely keep your eyes peeled.

We definitely will be keeping our eyes peeled! Finally, what’s the one thing you wish you knew before starting out in the industry that you could pass on as words of wisdom now?

Always stay true to yourself no matter what. There are distractions here, there, everywhere and everyone has a different opinion. Keep your eyes on the prize and don’t let anyone stop you from achieving your goal. Anything is possible.
