Laura Dern Sundance 'Tale' Acquired by HBO

The Tale, starring Laura Dern of Big Little Lies and Enlightened, has been picked up by HBO Films after its Sundance debut. The film, written and directed by Jennifer Fox, is based on Fox’s own survival of sexual abuse as a young teenager.

Dern portrays “Jennifer,” a dramatized version of Fox, who must search her memory in order to investigate her first sexual relationship. The Tale, which premieres in the wake of the #MeToo movement, is shaping up to be one of the most relevant releases to come out of the festival this year, according to Variety, with Dern “in a career-defining role.”

The Tale also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Ritter, Frances Conroy, Ellen Burstyn, Common, and Isabelle Nelisse as young Jennifer.
