James Morrison talks about grief and depression following father's death

Singer-songwriter James Morrison has revealed that following the death of his father last year, he fell into a period of depression and was "crying in bed all day, feeling numb".

The star's dad, Paul Catchpole, passed away in 2010 after suffering from liver disease that had been brought on by excessive alcohol consumption and Morrison opened up about his loss to the Daily Star:

"I'd phone him regularly to check he was alive. He wasn't great as a dad, but I wanted him to be around more."

"The last time I spoke to him, I said, 'You've got to be the person you should have been all those years ago. You've still got time. You can be a grandad and be around a lot more.' But he'd just say, 'I don't need any help.'"

Despite the inevitable heartbreak of losing a loved one, Morrison was able to lift the feeling of guilt he admitted to having over his "rock star lifestyle" as his father's death made him realise that "life's too short":

"I felt guilty about having a rock star lifestyle. But after my dad died, I thought, 'Life's too short. What have I got to show for all my sacrifices being away on tour so much? I want a banging house.' So I bought a 1900s country gentleman's residence in a small village. I may get a Jacuzzi and a swimming pool. Why not?"
