Janelle Monae: 'I want to redefine beauty and goals for young women'

Songstress Janelle Monae has opened up about her new album 'The Electric Lady' and what message she wants to send out with its release.

The record was unveiled yesterday (September 9) and she explained to Rolling Stone magazine that she wants to emulate confidence and gave it the title she did because it sounds empowering and strong:

"I want to redefine beauty and goals for young women. It's about breaking down stereotypes, fighting against oppression, trying to save the world."

"When thinking about who the Electric Lady is, I think about women standing up and being the voice of our community. She is an ambassador of great change and comes in different shapes, sizes, and colors. I won't become a slave to my own belief system, or my image, or how I have my hair."
