Jarvis Cocker awarded Honorary Doctorate

Jarvis Cocker is to be awarded an honorary doctorate at Sheffield Hallam University this November.

Sheffield-born Cocker credits the establishment – where Pulp first gave John Peel a demo tape – as being responsible for his career in music and art.

His studies at the then-polytechnic (now part of Sheffield Hallam University) also led to him being offered a place at London's Central St Martin's college in 1988, reports Uncut.co.uk.

"Sheffield Hallam started my career in two ways – firstly as a musician because John Peel 'discovered' us at Sheffield Polytechnic, and then as an artist," Cocker explained.

"If Sheffield Polytechnic hadn't allowed me to study on an access course then I would never have got my place at St Martins [college in London]."
