Jennifer Lopez is set to play the part of an undercover police officer in a new crime series.

The singer will play the lead role in new drama Shades of Blue, which revolves around a single mother detective who is employed by the FBI.

It is set to shoot next year and NBC boss Jennifer Salke said in a statement:

"Jennifer is an extraordinary talent and life force, and we're delighted to be in business with her...We're especially excited that Jennifer is returning to her acting roots...and we know that she will create this complicated character in a vivid way that will breathe new life into the cop show genre."

Lopez has starred in a number of films in her career, with credits in titles such as Maid in Manhattan and Jersey Girl.
