Justin Bieber's mother talks about his fame and says 'people think I'm his sister'

Pattie Mallette, the 38-year-old mother of Canadian superstar Justin Bieber, has opened up about his phenomenal success and also revealed that because of her age people don't expect him to be her son.

She gave an interview yesterday (July 8) to the Miami Herald and joked that the public often assume she's the 'Boyfriend' heartthrob's sister: "Some people think I'm his sister, at least they tell me they do. I'll take it!"

Mallette also spoke about Bieber's fame, confessing that it was accidental and that attention surrounding him merely "spiralled" out of control: "We didn't go looking for all of this. He just went to a local singing competition and put his videos on YouTube and the whole thing kind of spiralled and opened doors."

"Then I was just careful that we had good representation and good people around us. We took it one day at a time."

Back in March, Mallette admitted that watching Bieber grow up in the spotlight has been tough: "Him being 19, you know, I've just gotta let go a little and let him make some of his own decisions. He's growing up. He's 19. He's not my baby."
