Surprise New York Kanye West show cancelled after 'near riot'

A surprise Kanye West concert was cancelled at the last minute after a "near riot" from fans.

The rapper was due to play a show in the early hours of Monday morning (June 6) at New York's Webster Hall.

The US star had been booked to perform at the Governors Ball on Sunday (June 5), but it was cancelled due to bad weather.

Once news broke about West's surprise gig, around 4,000 fans flocked to the surrounding streets.

Eyewitnesses recalled the scene as being like a "near riot" as police attended.

At 1.45am local time, the venue declared that no gig was going to happen.

They said on Twitter: "There is no late show at Webster Hall tonight. Please get home safely."

The rapper was spotted appearing out the top of a car, with wife Kim Kardashian Snapchatting videos from the incident.

West was seen saying in a clip: "Call the mayor and shut down the block about four streets and put screens up so they could have a party outside, I heard it was sold out already."
