Katy Perry painting added to US National Portrait Gallery

A painting of Katy Perry has been added to America's National Portrait Gallery.

A portrait of the superstar singer painted by artist Will Cotton in 2010 will be shown in the prestigious Washington gallery from June 18.

The piece is entitled Cupcake Katy and it sees the 'Prism' icon wearing a cupcake style dress.

The painting will be part of a rotating display of newly acquired portraits and Museum Director Kim Sajet said that they included Perry because she is a 'complex' personality.

Other music stars who feature in the Smithsonian collection include Beyoncé, Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Artist Cotton meanwhile previously worked with Perry on her 'California Gurls' video.
