Katy Perry hoping to bring 'empowerment' to Super Bowl

Katy Perry has revealed her desire to bring "strength and empowerment" to those watching her upcoming Super Bowl performance.

The singer will perform the half-time slot at the American football event in Arizona on February 1.

In an interview with the AP, the US star talked about collaborating with the NFL after they came under fire for handling player Ray Rice's domestic assault case.

They initially banned the sportsman for two games in 2014 for punching his wife in a lift before removing and then reinstating the former Baltimore Ravens player from their books.

Perry said: "It wasn't an image problem [that the NFL faced], it was a problem. We were all watching and asking ourselves questions about what this year would mean. But I think that the problem that the NFL is dealing with is a global problem...we need to work out - or educate people on.

"I'm all about female empowerment and uplifting people's spirits, and people finding their own voice with songs like 'Roar' and 'Firework', so maybe there is no better person for the show. Hopefully I can bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance."
