Katy Perry leapfrogs Lady Gaga to become Twitter's most followed female

Katy Perry has become the most followed female on Twitter.

The 'Teenage Dream' songstress is currently sitting on almost 39.9m followers - around 600,000 more than Lady Gaga.

The 'Born This Way' star has often been regarded as the queen of Twitter, but her recent inactivity on the social networking website may have worked to her disadvantage.

Her page is currently bare and without any icon as she builds up mystique ahead of her 'ARTPOP' album launch later in the year.

Perry meanwhile is still lagging behind the most followed person on Twitter - Justin Bieber - who is currently enjoying a staggering 41.3m followers.

Other big Twitter hitters include Taylor Swift with 31.4m followers, whilst Rihanna has roughly 30.78m.
