It has been confirmed this evening (August 12) that pop superstar Katy Perry will take the stage at the 2013 MTV VMAs to perform her brand new single, 'Roar'.

A tweet was sent from the music brand's official page earlier tonight to share the exciting news and it read: "#Katycats, it's true. @KatyPerry will perform #ROAR live for the first time at the #VMAs."

This year's star-studded ceremony will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 25 and other performers that will treat both the live audience and viewers at home to live sets include Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

Perry unveiled her new single, 'Roar', today and she has also uploaded a unique lyric video for the song that includes a cameo from her pet cat and is driven by a text message interface that uses emoticons to convey the words.

When asked by U.S. radio host Ryan Seacrest what the song is about, she said: "This song is about speaking up for yourself. There was a time in my life where I didn’t stand for anything so I fell for everything so finally I have the strength to rise above and roar."
