Katy Perry: 'I wrote 'Roar' after going through a lot of therapy'

'Teenage Dream' beauty Katy Perry has opened up about her brand new single and revealed that it was written as a response to the therapy she went through following her divorce from British funnyman, Russell Brand.

Speaking to Radio 1's Scott Mills, the hitmaker confessed that 'Roar' was a cathartic song to write as it deals with her innermost feelings and shows her recovery:

"I wrote it because I was sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself, which caused a lot of resentment. Obviously I've been through a lot of therapy since my last record and that's what this is about."

She also recently told America's Ryan Seacrest that the track is about strength and courage: "This song is about speaking up for yourself. There was a time in my life where I didn’t stand for anything so I fell for everything so finally I have the strength to rise above and roar."

Perry will perform 'Roar' live at this year's MTV VMAs, which will take place on August 25 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
