Get out of London for a weekend and head to these Kent festivals

When a festival bursts into life, that’s often when you can see a city in its element; rich with culture, bodies and the energy that comes with them, visiting a city is a completely different experience during the festival period. Is there somewhere in Kent that you’ve always wanted to see?

BOing! Family festival
bounces into Kent on the last weekend of August, with some of the best theatre, music, dance and film to delight all ages. This year they have even more brilliant artists from across the UK and Europe and a number of new pieces performed at bOing! for the very first time, including a world premiere of Pinocchio by Jasmin Vardimon Company. With many of the events free, B&B accommodation on offer at the University of Kent and plenty of places to stay in the gorgeous centre of Canterbury, why not make a weekend of it?

Wheels and Fins is a completely free, three day festival of music and action sports running from the 9th-11th of September. Events include Soapbox Racing, Skateboard Mini Ramp comp, UK BMX flatland champs, surf & stand-up paddleboard events, trail bike display teams, mad drop air bag, slacklining, fireworks, live music, DJ’s, licensed bars, craft beers, a food court, merchandise stalls and way more. The festival is only an hour and a half from London on the high-speed train, making it a day trip for any eager beach thrill-seeker. Not many festivals around the UK can boast that.

Skabour fest brings you the very best of ska at Folkestone Harbour from the 16th-18th September. With huge acts such as The Skints, The English Beat and the Dualers, Erin Bardwell Collective and Macka B, it’s not a atmosphere that you’re likely to find in the centre of London — better to chill out down by the sea with a beer and some tunes new and old.

Canterbury Festival will be running from the 15th of October to the 11th of November. It’s a festival that will warm and astound you through the transition into the coming winter; hidden away in the walls of this ancient city, Canterbury becomes a stage both some of the best artists and performers that the UK has. Joining us this year will be Wilko Johnson, Mark Steel and Marcus Brigstoke. There are also plenty of undiscovered acts for you to stumble upon across the city; with talks, visual arts, performers, music and a science exhibition. If you’re looking for inspiration, this is the place to find it.
