Lady Gaga to receive first 'icon' award at Songwriters Hall of Fame

'Born This Way' sensation Lady Gaga will be honoured for her songwriting ability at a special ceremony this coming June.

The music icon is set to receive the inaugural Contemporary Icon Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 19 and a statement from the organisation explains that this prize was created "to honour a performing songwriter "who has attained an iconic status in pop culture".

fun.'s Nate Ruess will also receive an honour at the event and is confirmed to be given the Hal David Starlight Award, which is given to young songwriters. The ceremony itself will be held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City this summer.

Gaga, meanwhile, recently opened up about being bullied as a youngster and admitted that it encouraged her to launch her foundation and to actively try to stop others from going through the same thing: "I know what it's like to feel depressed, to feel humiliated, to feel isolated and I know too many young people that, no matter who they are or where they come from, they're feeling the same way I do. It was so beautiful in a way that our sadness bonded us at the shows, and yet I so badly wanted to understand why that cloud was there at all."
