Lady Gaga sang Super Bowl national anthem 'from the heart'

Lady Gaga says she looked to her "heart" for inspiration while singing the US national anthem at this year's Super Bowl.

The singer was tasked with performing 'Star Spangled Banner' at the American football event on Sunday (February 7).

She impressed the watching masses and was universally praised for her slot.

Speaking to Extra, Gaga said she delved deep within herself while performing the tune.

The 'ARTPOP' star said: "I just thought about the lyrics and what they really mean. They’ve been around a long time, so I thought about what they mean now, I just sang from my heart.

"It’s kind of ancient history stuff, in the Greek and Roman history, performing for the greatest athletics in the world is the highest honour. I’m Italian and European, so, for me, it was such an honour as an American.

"It was really amazing, the athletes were just kind of majestic standing up there, singing for the fans in the stands and all over the world, it was so cool."

Gaga was later followed by Coldplay's half-time performance, which included guest spots from Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.
