Lady Gaga on the election: 'Mitt Romney lacks the compassion that America needs right now'

Pop superstar Lady Gaga has spoken out about today's (November 6) election in the USA and urged fans and listeners of Z Hip-Hop Cleveland to vote for President Barack Obama.

Speaking to the station's Colby Colb, she explained that her vote is going to Obama because of the value he places on ensuring equality is accessible to people from all walks of life and stressed the importance of turning up to your local polling station to get your voice heard:

"As far as being a passionate American, that is 100% true. I'm particularly passionate about the youth of our country. Really, I'm just calling today to remind everybody in Cleveland how important it is that you vote. Democracy is founded upon the voice of the people and if you don't vote it's not a democracy anymore. We're turning it into a kingdom."

"We want a strong united nation that isn't divided, that comes together in the name of freedom. I've sent in my absentee ballot and I've watched all the debates, and I decided that I'll be voting for President Obama."

When asked to explain her choice, Gaga continued: "I've been delving into the campaign and Mitt Romney's campaign, and I just tried to make a really informed decision. Ultimtely, what it comes down to is I feel that Mitt Romney lacks a certain amount of compassion that America needs right now - especially for young people. The young people are going to take us into the future."

She went on to discuss how Romney's stance against allowing gay couples to have children is something she doesn't agree with and added that it's vital people recognise how damaging this kind of attitude can be:

"It matters because when you vote, you're represnting yourself as a valuable and important member of society [...] when you have a president in office that listens to the people, which is the kind of office Obama has run for the past four years, he's always taken into consideration the importance of social issues to the American people. What I'm worried about is the health of young Americans. I want strong, healthy, intelligent, educated young people that are ready to take on the world and help get the economy to where it needs to be."
