Lady Gaga Russian gig promoter fined for 'gay propaganda'

The promoter of a Lady Gaga gig in St. Petersburg last year has been fined for 'propaganda of alcohol consumption and homosexuality'.

The 'Born This Way' star performed in the Russian city in December but a judge has now ruled that the show violated a Russian law which refers to the 'protection of children from information that could harm their health and/or development'.

Promoters Planeta Plus were fined 20,000 roubles (£409) for their part in hosting the show.

The mother of a 13-year-old daughter who attended the concert initiated the case by raising concerns over her child witnessing apparent 'simulated lesbian sex', as well as hearing encouragement to drink alcohol.

Yevgeny Filkenstein, who runs Planeta Plus, commented:

"We don't agree with this verdict because no one listened to us. Because of these laws against gay propaganda adopted here, because of these cheap publicity tricks, all viewers suffer. Just recently, Peter Gabriel, who has never performed in Russia, refused to come because of this law and because he supported Pussy Riot."

Russia's laws on promoting homosexuality to minors has entangled a number of acts, with retrospective action against Madonna recently being thrown out of court.

Cher meanwhile recently declined an invitation to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia as a result of the country's laws on homosexuality.
