X Factor to be investigated over 'Lady Gaga' audition

The UK X Factor is to be investigated by Ofcom over an audition that saw a mother perform the Lady Gaga song 'The Edge of Glory', reports the BBC.

51-year-old single mother Alison Brunton performed the track earlier this year as the X Factor toured the country during its audition stage.

The cringe-worthy performance was panned by the judges and Brunton was told to stop singing early.

She had, however, brought her two children - aged 14 and 16 - who were watching backstage and featured on the show looking somewhat embarrassed by their mother.

Broadcasting guidelines state that under-18s must not be "caused unnecessary distress or anxiety by their involvement in programmes" and as a result, industry watchdog Ofcom are investigating the episode, which was shown recently.

A spokeswoman for the ITV series said: "The X Factor does not include child contestants but takes the welfare of any children featured in the show very seriously. It is a well-established format and contestants regularly bring along their family to support them, as Alison did. Footage of family members is only used when appropriate consent has been obtained."

X Factor meanwhile is also being investigated over a Britney Spears impersonator whose saucy audition saw her sit on the lap of judge Louis Walsh.

Lauren Laverne on The X Factor: 'I won't go home and listen to One Direction'

'10 O'Clock Live' presenter Lauren Laverne has shared her opinion on the televised vocal contest 'The X Factor' and admitted that while it's great for ratings it doesn't produce the best music.

Speaking to London's Evening Standard newspaper, she explained how talent shows are important for the future and longevity of television, but added that she's not so much a fan of the groups they put together:

"The emphasis of 'The X Factor' is on the televisual aspect; on that level you can’t fault it."

"The music is incidental and I don’t have a problem with it — but obviously I’m not going to go home and listen to One Direction."

Despite having been discovered on the programme, heartthrobs One Direction have gone on to enjoy an incredibly successful career and the music video for their new single, 'Live While We're Young', has racked up almost 4 million hits in 24 hours.

EMI-Universal deal cleared on condition that some of their big labels must be sold

Regulators in both the US and EU today confirmed (September 21) that the proposed takeover of UK music firm EMI by Universal Music can go ahead, but some of Universal's assets need to be sold.

The assets referred to include some of the company's biggest labels such as Parlophone, which houses Kylie Minogue and iconic rockers Pink Floyd.

The BBC reports that "the Commission's demand for assets sales also includes disposal of EMI's Chrysalis, Mute, and Classics labels, as well as Universal's Sanctuary and Co-op Music labels." An official statement was issued by EU competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia, which explains the need to 'preserve' the competitive nature of the music industry:

"The very significant commitments proposed by Universal will ensure that competition in the music industry is preserved and that European consumers continue to enjoy all its benefits. Competition in the music business is crucial to preserve choice, cultural diversity and innovation."

"In this investigation, we have paid close attention to digital innovation, which is changing the way that people listen to music."

A spokesperson from Universal added: "Today's approval brings to an end an extensive EU regulatory review and the acquisition will benefit the artistic community and music industry."

Universal also confirmed that its catalogue would still include the Beatles, Beach Boys, Genesis, Katy Perry, Emeli Sandé and Robbie Williams.

The three surviving members of Led Zeppelin refused to rule out a further reunion today (September 21) as they launched a new live film.

In a rare appearance together, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones assembled in a London cinema to preview Celebration Day, a film of their one-off 2007 reunion gig.

The band teamed up with drummer Jason Bonham - son of late original member John Bonham - for a massive gig at London's O2 Arena nearly five years ago to commemorate the life of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, who had passed away.

In a media Q&A with the band today, Led Zeppelin dodged questions about a further reunion, with guitarist Jimmy Page retorting:

"Can I just ask you all if you enjoyed the film?"

When further pressed for an answer on the idea of another reunion, singer Robert Plant quipped: "That would be kiss and tell."

Their show in 2007 was their first together in 27 years, with 20 million fans applying for tickets - but only 19,000 were selected for tickets.

Celebration Day will hit cinemas in the UK on October 17, with a DVD release on November 19.

After Lady Gaga was seen 'smoking marijuana' on stage during a recent concert, a London-based substance abuse charity has admitted that it's sad to see a superstar promoting substance abuse.

The pop icon was in Amsterdam on her Born This Way Ball tour when she lit up what was thought to be a joint and told the crowd that she loves the drug for its relaxing properties:

"I want you to know it has totally changed my life and I've really cut down on drinking. It has been a totally spiritual experience for me with my music."

Now, chief executive of Blenheim CDP John Jolly has spoken out against Gaga's actions and slammed her decision to paint the drug in a positive light when she has young people who look up to her as a role model:

"I think it’s always unhelpful when people in the public eye of a particular influence are seen engaging in drug use, particularly because cannabis use is a significant problem for people under 25 in the UK. The predominant drug we are dealing with in our treatment centers for people under 25 years old is cannabis so it’s particularly unhelpful when things like this happen.”

Speaking to Marie Claire magazine, Mackintosh explained that fans of the boyband would wait outside of Caggie's parents' house and used to turn up unannounced:

"It was horrible for Caggie. When people are showing up outside your parent's house it's gone too far. Caggie is a fun loving girl, I don't think she minded the attention too much but it all does get a bit much.
