Lady Gaga criticised for failing to acknowledge Linder Sterling's original meat dress

Lady Gaga has been criticised by artist Linder Sterling over the influence Sterling had on the pop singer’s infamous meat dress.

In 2010 Lady Gaga wore a dress made of meat to the MTV Video Music Awards. Gaga’s dress was designed by Franc Fernandez and is now displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ‘ARTPOP’ star also recreated the dress as part of her wardrobe for her Monster Ball live tour.

Prior to debuting her dress at the awards ceremony Lady Gaga wore a bikini made of meat for the cover of the September 2010 edition of Vogue Hommes Japan.

However, Gaga’s use of raw meat clothing came over two decades after the artist Linder Sterling wore a dress made of discarded chicken for a 1982 performance at Manchester’s Hacienda night club.

In an interview with the Guardian, when asked if she was annoyed by the amount of attention Lady Gaga’s dress drew, Linder answered:

“A little bit. The lack of acknowledgment. Our generation always acknowledged our influences. That does not seem to happen so much any more. You have to do it, though, otherwise people don't go on the great journey of discovery that impelled you to become an artist.”

She added: “An artist is not hermetically sealed off from the world. History, after all, is one big dressing-up box.”
