Miley Cyrus et al prompt proposals to age-rate music videos

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has confirmed that it is looking into censoring music videos.

The likes of Miley Cyrus and Rihanna have raised eyebrows recently for overtly sexual music clips and this has worried parents.

The former, along with Britney Spears, recently saw one of her videos relegated to the post-watershed schedule in France.

The BBFC have now revealed that they are working with industry body BPI and Google about age-rating music videos after a deluge of comments from parents.

Their assistant director David Austin said: "Google has said that if we start to age-rate videos, they will carry the BBFC age rating. They've also said they will look at the possibility of parental controls in relation to age rating."

A report from the BBFC added that "music videos were identified as a key source of sexual imagery, which parents believed to be potentially harmful to young girls’ emotional wellbeing and social development".

It added that the "overwhelming reaction to the music videos content was one of shock and incredulity".
