US folk singer Pete Seeger dies

Folk singer Pete Seeger has died aged 94.

The musician's grandson confirmed that he passed away in a New York hospital following a short illness.

Seeger is perhaps best known for songs like 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' and 'If I Had A Hammer', as well as his stint in the Weavers.

He was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and he also won a Grammy in 1997 after bagging the ceremony's lifetime achievement honour four years earlier.

Seeger was nominated at the 2014 Grammy Awards on Sunday (January 26) in the spoken word category.

Known for his political inclinations, the musician was blacklisted in the 1950s for his leftist stance.

His 90th birthday meanwhile saw the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews celebrate his career at a special event at New York's Madison Square Garden.
