Justin Bieber charged with assaulting limousine driver

Justin Bieber has been charged by Toronto police for allegedly assaulting a limousine driver.

The singer is accused of striking a driver in the early hours of December 30 after being picked up at a nightclub along with a number of other passengers.

The 19-year-old handed himself into police amid a media scrum on Wednesday (January 29).

He faces one count of assault, with police confirming: "While driving the group to a hotel, an altercation occurred between one of the passengers and the driver of the limousine.

"In the course of the altercation, a man struck the limousine driver on the back of the head several times. The driver stopped the limousine, exited the vehicle and called police. The man who struck him left the scene before police arrived."

Bieber is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on March 10. The singer's lawyer Howard Weitzman said that the 'Believe' man is innocent and that he expects the case to be treated as a summary offence, which is similar to a misdemeanour in the US.

The 19-year-old meanwhile was also arrested on suspicion of DUI, resisting arrest and driving without a valid licence earlier this month in Miami.

That case is due to be heard next on February 14.
