Sam Smith's 'Money On My Mind' debuts at No. 1 in UK singles chart

British vocalist Sam Smith has soared to the top of the UK singles chart.

Smith’s ‘Money On My Mind’ has sold 108,000 copies in the past seven days and has secured him the No. 1 title.

Sam Smith enjoyed a shared No. 1 single last year as a featured artist on Naughty Boy’s hit ‘La La La’ but ‘Money On My Mind’ gives him his first solo chart-topper.

After winning the Critics’ Choice award at the BRIT Awards earlier this week, Sam Smith is the only recipient of the title to have a debut single go straight in at No. 1.

The rest of this week’s top five is made up by Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ which is up one to No. 2, Clean Bandit’s run at the top has now ended with ‘Rather Be’ falling to No. 3, a new entry from Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera at No. 4 with ‘Say Something’ and Zedd with Hayley Williams has fallen three places to No. 5.

Apart from Sam Smith and Great Big World, other new entries to this week’s chart come from Tegan and Sara alongside comedy group The Lonely Island with ‘Everything Is Awesome’ – taken from ‘The Lego Movie’ – at No. 17. Bastille and Rudimental’s BRIT Awards performance mash up of their hits ‘Pompeii’ and ‘Waiting All Night’ has debuted at No. 21. Boy band M.A.D. have landed at No. 32 with ‘Fame & TV’.

The BRIT Awards have had a significant impact on the singles chart with winners, nominees and performers all enjoying sales boosts.

Beyonce’s ‘XO’ is back in the top 40 at No. 23 as well as ‘Drunk In Love’ climbing eight places to No. 12. Bastille’s original version of ‘Pompeii’ has surged back into the chart at No. 20. John Newman’s ‘Love Me Again’ is now at No. 33. Ellie Goulding has three singles in the top 40; ‘How Long Will I Love You’ at No. 25, ‘Goodness Gracious’ at No. 26 and ‘Burn’ at No. 35. Lorde’s ‘Royals’ is back in the chart at No. 35 and Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ has risen to No. 39.
