R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe on Meeting Kurt Cobain

Singer Michael Stipe, of R.E.M. fame, has opened up about the first time he met the late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain and praised his spirit.

Speaking at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony yesterday (April 10), Stipe explained that the first time he met the 'In Bloom' icon he instantly knew he was a special person:

"That voice, that voice. Kurt, we miss you. I miss you. He was late. It was in Krist's basement in Seattle — he and Courtney had moved into the house next door to my former guitar player Peter Buck... The first time I looked into his eyes I just went, 'I get it. He is all that. He is a very special person.'"

Stipe then added: "He had really blue eyes."

'Royals' songstress Lorde performed with Nirvana at the event and told her followers on Twitter that it was a dream come true: "So honoured and happy i got to help celebrate nirvana's rock and roll hall of fame induction tonight. true f*cking rock stars, all, forever. And man, joan, annie and kim give a healthy display of Coolest Women You Will Ever Meet Behaviour."
