The 1975 credit One Direction with "sky-rocketing" their fan numbers

The 1975 believe their link with One Direction has helped to boost their number of fans.

The UK indie group performed a cover of the boyband's 'What Makes You Beautiful' on BBC Radio's Live Lounge in 2013.

This subsequently led to One Direction showing their support for the band and later meeting them in person.

Speaking to Digital Spy, singer Matt Healy confirmed previous reports that they are writing a song for One Direction.

He added that the group actually picked them personally and that the band's link has helped boost their fanbase.

Healy said: "I went into the studio with them and we started to work on one track. They were asked to list who they wanted to work with on the next album, and we were one of the people they chose."

Speaking meanwhile about their Live Lounge cover, the musician said:

"There was that guy on The X Factor called Luke [Friend] who did our version as his cover, and I think that's how it was brought to their attention.

"They are big fans of the album and they supported us by tweeting, which sent our fan base sky-rocketing."
