Netmums say One Direction stars shouldn't forget role model status after 'pot' video emerges

Parenting website Netmums believe One Direction singers Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson should be more aware of their status as role models to young children.

The two stars seemingly appear in a new video taken by Tomlinson that sees the a joint being passed around a van in Peru last month.

Malik in particular is seen apparently puffing on the drug and various references are made to marijuana and also the police.

Nicola Lamond from the parenting haven Netmums told ITV News that whilst the celebrities taking drugs is not unusual, the age of One Direction's audience causes problems.

She said: "Popstars doing drugs is nothing new – but when you market your music to pre-teen children, you take on real responsibility as a role model.

“Parents need to know their infant and junior age child’s idol won’t be caught out doing anything illegal or immoral. Perhaps [Malik] needs to do some work with a charity specialising in helping children overcome the harrowing effects of drug use in their family.”
