Beastie Boys win $1.7m copyright case against Monster

Beastie Boys have been given $1.7m (£1.1m) after winning a copyright lawsuit against the Monster Energy Co.

The drinks company admitted to using clips of the rap group's songs in an advert for five weeks before taking it down.

The have been judged liable for ten violations of copyright, with the Beastie Boys receiving $120,000 (£71,000) for each breach.

A jury also give the band $500,000 (£297,000) after ruling that Monster had used the band's 'persona without permission'.

The Beastie Boys' third member Adam 'MCA 'Yauch died aged 47 in 2012 and his will stated that his music wouldn't be allowed to be used in advertising.

It read: "In no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes."

Monster had argued over the amount of money they should be liable to pay and the company will appeal against the ruling.
