Sam Smith has been added to the line-up for this year's MTV VMAs.

The awards ceremony are taking place in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 24) and the 'Stay With Me' star will take to the stage.

He commented on the news: "I have watched the VMAs every year since I was a kid. I am so insanely nervous but also so honoured to be performing. This truly is a pinch yourself moment for me."

The singer will join a bill that already features the likes of Taylor Swift, 5 Seconds of Summer and Nicki Minaj.

Smith is nominated in two categories at the event - Best Male Music Video and Artist to Watch.

The Brit will also perform at a special VMAs charity fundraiser gig on August 22.

The Los Angeles event will raise money for Lifebeat's Music Fights HIV/AIDS education and prevention campaign.
