Shawn Mendes on comparisons to his contemporaries: 'It gets crazy'

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes has revealed that he's used to being compared to other male solo artists and doesn't find it annoying when he's put alongside them.

When asked about the comparisons to Justin Bieber that appear now and again in different interviews, Mendes confessed to MTV that while he doesn't know the 'As Long As You Love Me' heartthrob personally, he understands why he is often likened to him:

"I mean I don’t know the guy personally, but I guess our music could be similar in some ways, and very different in others. I used to listen to a lot of his stuff, not so much lately because I’ve been trying to do stuff of my own, and things just got crazy."

He then opened up about his influences and admitted that he's inspired by the likes of Ed Sheeran and 'Mirrors' hitmaker Justin Timberlake: "Ed Sheeran has been a big influence for me, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars. Justin is incredible."

Mendes also shared details of a rather unnerving fan encounter that ended up making the news in Toronto: "I was doing a performance in Toronto and this girl got up on stage and wrapped her arms around my neck. She was throwing me around, going crazy and security had to rip her off me. It got on the news in Toronto."
